Japanese lacquer bento box: Folding fans and temari balls

Here's a great gift! A beautiful large square 2-compartment Japanese lacquer bento box with three temari balls and a folding fan motif for its cover. Temari ball is a symbol of perfection. It's a gift of joy and happiness, often given for good luck in the new year. The Japanese folding fan originally symbolized good wishes and cheer, but has become a symbol of art.

The interior of the bento box is black. This large lacquer bento box can be used for storing cookies, chocolates or just plain food. Hand washing recommended.

Not only are Japanese lacquer bento boxes elegant, beautiful, and light,  but they are also made to last for a long time. Please read more about what makes Japanese lacquer so well known and cherished in the Note.

Japanese lacquer ware

Lacquer has been a part of Japanese tradition dating back to 6,000 years. Japanese lacquer is recognized the world over for its aesthetic and technical zenith.

Japanese lacquer comes from the urushi tree as sap. After a long period of aging process from 3-5 years, it can be applied as coating using different methods on countless forms and surfaces. A hardened urushi coating not only gives a high gloss to the finished product but also repels water, resists acid, alkali, salt, and alcohol, and insulates against heat and electricity.

Variation of different methods emerged over time as unique techniques and styles:
